Chief Design Officer at Barclays
Derek White is the Chief Design Officer for Barclays. Derek is responsible for translating customer insights into execution and creating, developing and delivering outstanding customer experiences that pave the way for Barclays to become the ‘Go-To’ bank”.
He was a key player in the development of Barclays Pingit, the ground-breaking new mobile payments application launched in February 2012. This passion for innovating and growing businesses began in college when he started a collegiate event marketing company. Upon graduation, he was hired by one of his clients (now JP Morgan Chase) to grow a fledgling sports and entertainment partnership business. After launching over 200 partnerships he played a key role in expanding the business internationally. Derek joined Barclays in 2004 through the acquisition of Juniper Bank (now Barclaycard US), where he was an early member of the start-up internet bank and credit card issuer. He has held the roles of Managing Director of Strategy, Business Development and Marketing for Barclays Africa as well as senior positions in Emerging Markets and Barclaycard International. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the USA.
As a member of the Institute of International Finance Future Leaders Group, Derek is a top industry practitioner and esteemed thought leader in the ecosystems and future of customer experience, innovation and entrepreneurialism. Derek also holds a position on the Board of London & Partners, a partnership funded by the Mayor of London that brings together the remits of the capital’s promotional agencies in order to unlock the city for new businesses; is on the steering committee of the Big Innovation Centre, which aims to make the UK a global open innovation hub, to build a world-class innovation ecosystem.
